Clarion Week 3: Chess with Kress REMATCH! July 16, 2006 After Tuesday's chess game with Beggars in Spain author Nancy Kress, she requested, nay, demanded a rematch. After some delays that neither of us will admit were due to cowardice, we finally met again in Owen Hall to settle some scores. (more after the jump) Kress won the first match of the day, but not before shouting "You forked me!" a few times. At first I thought this a funny alternative for a vulgar expression. But she explained to me that a fork was a real chess move where you put two of your opponent's pieces in danger simultaneously and he or she can only save one. In the next game she said: "Shit!" a few times, which in chess terminology is a move in which your opponent unexpectedly takes your knight with his bishop. So we were 1-1 and decided to make it two out of three. All three games were close (well, I got clobbered on that first game of the day, in spite of my forking ability), but I ended up barely squeaking out a win on the third game. "Someday, Alex," Nancy said as we put the set away. She was smiling, which I took as a good sign. "Someday you'll be up for a major industry award." "Thanks," I said, because I have suddenly decided that she is never wrong. "You'll be up for an award and you'll lose by one vote," she said. "And when you're wondering who cast that deciding vote, I want you to remember this day, Alex." "Chris," I said. "My name's Chris. I think you have me mixed up with one of the other students." Thanks to Shveta for taking the chess pix at the beginning of yesterday's game. Filed under Clarion, Journal, News, Pretty Pictures Comments: Discuss this entry at LiveJournal LOL!
