Clarion Week 4: Jamming with Joe Haldeman July 21, 2006
Tonight was poetry and music night courtesy of Joe and Gay Haldeman. Tough that it came on a night with five stories to critique, a few of them pretty long, but it was a good stress reliever (or exacerbator, depending on how difficult it was to squeeze in writing a poem this week). And I got to jam with Joe, so I'm a happy man. (more after the jump) I'd post my poem (a limerick set loosely about a clone), but there are visual and spoken requirements that make it fall flat in text form, not to mention at least one Clarion in-joke. I also covered my bets by wearing a skirt, so just in case people didn't find the perfomance funny, they at least got to see some leg. The sunset through the curtains played hell with my digital point-and-shoot, so the following shots of Steve Berman and Steve Gaskell are the only shots that turned out at all. While Brad was eating, he asked me to take a few shots with his digital SLR though (which was surprisingly easy to use). If any of those turned out I'll ask him if I can share them with y'all when things get less hectic 'round here. Does anyone else think Steve Berman's (right, below) new haircut makes him look a lot like Cory Doctorow?
So Joe's Backpacker guitar (cheapest way to own a Martin) isn't classical as mine is, but steel string. Turns out he prefers nylon/classical, so we swapped guitars for most of the evening. Neither my string set nor his has been replaced in a long time, so they were hard to keep in tune internally, and even harder with each other. Our song vocabulary had very little overlap, so that, too, was a slight obstacle. But it all worked out and was a lot of fun. I so want to learn some of his original filk songs. He's got one he wrote in the 70s that explores the sames stuff I tried to hit with my Clarion Journey Theme Song. My fingers are blistered and still hurt, but it was worth it.
Probably offline until Sunday night. Toodles. Filed under Clarion, Journal, News, Pretty Pictures Comments: Discuss this entry at LiveJournal Steel string? Ouch. No wonder you have blisters. Sounds like you had fun, though. Posted by: Jason Erik Lundberg at July 21, 2006 9:13 AM I usually play steel string. It's just been a while since I picked up anything and getting used to any new guitar is tough. Posted by: Alex at July 21, 2006 9:37 AM I thought that was a Martin. Cheapest way to a Martin, but still darn expensive. Posted by: Steve Buchheit at July 21, 2006 11:07 PM Played an hour or so this morning, Alex, just sightreading. My cabin here on Norton Island is a couple of hundred yards from anybody else, so I can plonk away. Hurts, but of course we sci fi guys laugh at pain. Cool and rainy here, actually a nice change from Florida and Michigan. Writing up a storm. Joe Posted by: Joe Haldeman at July 24, 2006 8:15 AM Cool, Joe. Hope I didn't leave any blood on your guitar. Heh. Posted by: Alex at July 24, 2006 9:18 PM |
